TORY MPs have accused ministers of a war on motorists as they prepare to spend millions more on cycle schemes.

Fourteen backbenchers have joined forces with motoring groups to slam the move.

They say drivers are “feeling victimised by draconian charges and road restrictions” introduced over the past few months.

The Department of Transport is set to announce another huge chunk of its £2billion Active Travel Fund to promote more cycling and walking.

Earlier this year, councils used the fund for pop-up cycle lanes and wider pavements.

But Tory backbencher Craig Mackinlay said: “The UK’s 37million motorists and delivery vehicles should not be demonised as they often are.

“The car is one of the most liberating inventions ever.

FairFuelUK’s Howard Cox claimed businesses and communities are being “devastated by myopic local authorities”.

He said: “Strangulation of our roads by new vacant cycle lanes and road blockades is intensifying congestion, escalating pollution and risking lives by delaying emergency services.”
