The 53-year-old tweeted: “Regrettably my cancer has progressed. Am starting a new line of treatment this week & receiving great care from the team at Guys and St Thomas’ hospital.
“Unwelcome news but keeping upbeat.”
He shared a picture of him and wife Cathy, who he said had been “amazing” as well as their three children.
Mr Brokenshire said he now needed space to recover.
Boris Johnson led a flood of well-wishers from across the political divide and said: “So sorry to hear James. Our thoughts are with you and your family, and we hope you recover soon.”
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer added: “This is very sad news James but glad to hear you’re in good hands.
