Brits believe Sir Keir Starmer would make a better PM than Boris Johnson, survey reveals

SIR Keir Starmer would make a better Prime Minister than Boris Johnson, a survey has found for the first time.

Thirty-seven per cent of people believe the new Labour leader would do a better job leading the country than the sitting PM – who polled two per cent less.

Research carried out by Opinium has found that the ex-lawyer has enjoyed higher approval ratings than the Tory PM for the past six weeks. But the Conservatives still hold a four-point lead with 43 per cent in terms of voting intention.

The majority of the public is also disapproving of the government’s handling of the Covid-19 crisis.

Nearly three in five, some 59 per cent, believe current levels of testing are sufficient and 57 per cent disapprove with deployment of the test and trace system.

But many of the 2,002 adults who were quizzed this week have found a few “silver linings” to the coronavirus outbreak.

A third say they have more cash to spend or have been saving since the lockdown started in March.

Half have been keeping up current affairs more, 42 per cent have been reading more books and 30 per cent have been reading more.

Worryingly for the High Street, 36 per cent say they will spend less on shopping when restrictions are lifted and a third will not spend as much in pubs and restaurants.

Adam Drummond, head of political polling at Opinium, said: “Politically, the “new normal” is that for the first time in over a decade Labour has a leader who outperforms their party while the Conservatives have a leader who underperforms theirs and the crossover in preferred prime minister is a reflection of that.”

“Boris Johnson’s approval rating remains narrowly negative while Keir Starmer’s remains substantially positive moving from a net +22 last week to +27 this week.”
